Corfu Town, known locally as Kerkyra, is the capital of the magical Greek island of Corfu. Although the town is quite touristy, you'll be amazed by its stunning Venetian-style architecture, delicious cuisine, and friendly people. While most people prefer to spend their time in Corfu in luxury resorts or on white sandy beaches, we think Corfu Town is well worth a day visit. In this article, we share our top tips for your day in Corfu Town, including the most beautiful sights, local restaurants to try, and some essential travel tips.
đ Day 1 - 12 stops
1.Starenio Bakery
Start your day at Starenio Bakery, one of the best places to eat traditional Greek pastries on the island. They offer vegetarian and vegan pies, but don't be fooled, they don't taste vegan at all! Their pies are buttery, flaky and delicious. You can choose from traditional spanakopita pastry, tomato cheese pastry, and many other delicious flavors. Grab yourself a coffee and enjoy a quiet morning at one of the tables outside. If you have a sweet tooth, you can also grab one of their many cakes, like the classic Greek walnut cake.
2.New Venetian Fortress
The New Castle is one of the most important landmarks of Corfu Town, symbolizing the rich Venetian history of the island. The castle began to be built in 1576 under Venetian rule and began in the 17th century, when the threat of Ottoman invasion was felt in many parts of the Mediterranean. This castle was built on the hill of San Marco and was designed by Italian military engineer Ferrante Vitelli to structure the defenses of the town to complement the existing Old Castle. Ticket cost is âŹ4 per person.
3.Corfu Central Market
Just below the New Corfu Castle is a lively Central Market. This market is the center of the town's daily life, where local people socialize and shop for daily food. The stalls feature fresh products, delicacies and local tastes. Everything is available, from fresh fish to locally grown fruit, olives, herbs and homemade bread. Even if you don't buy food, this is a great place to experience daily life in Corfu Town and browse local produce.
4.Saint Spyridon Church
St. Spyridon Church is a famous Greek Orthodox church located in the center of Corfu Town. Dedicated to St. Spyridon, the island's patron saint, the church was built in the late 16th century and is known for housing the saint's relics, which were brought to Corfu in 1489 after the fall of Constantinople. The interior of the church is decorated with beautifully decorated ceilings, ornate chandeliers and exquisitely painted icons. Saint Spyridon is much loved by the local people and is highly respected for saving the island from various disasters throughout its history. However, photography is not allowed inside the church.
5.Old Town of Corfu
One of the best things to do in Corfu Town is to wander the streets and alleys of the charming old town. The city amazes with its beautiful buildings, deeply influenced by the periods of Venetian, French and British rule. The town is full of pastel-colored buildings and Venetian-style shutters, making you wonder if you're still in Greece or just wandering the streets of Venice. You'll find many boutiques selling local handicrafts, Mediterranean-style clothing, jewelry and pottery. Unfortunately, most offer the same things over and over again. You may have to look really hard to find a unique souvenir. One of the most popular products you can find in the old city are various kumquat products. This fruit originally comes from Asia but has been grown in Corfu for nearly 100 years. You can find kumquat jams, kumquat chocolates, kumquat liqueur and more around town. We personally loved the chocolate nougat with hazelnuts and kumquats; They were absolutely delicious.
